Fifth graders did pen drawings of a musical still life.  There is a photo of the still life on the fifth grade page.
Fourth grade has worked Ancient Egyptian profile portraits, and metal embossing.
Third grade students have painted pictures of fall trees, and made fall leaf necklaces.  They also created fall landscapes.
Second Grade has been working on painting.
Second graders also used crayon texture rubbings to create these cool owls.  Gluing skills are something we will work on all year long!
First Graders worked on cutting and gluing skills.  They created a still life with construction paper.  They also created horses with folding, cutting and gluing.

First graders learned about watercolor resist.  It was really cool to watch the watercolor bead up on the oil pastel.
Second graders reviewed the cool and warm colors with dinosaur mixed media pictures.
Third graders looked at various kinds of leaves before creating their watercolor resist paintings.
Our world is changing and one of the closest examples is the loss of our old bridges.  Fourth graders looked at photos of bridges around the world and those close to home.  Some, like our Austin Bridge in SanteFe Park have been preserved, but others like the seven arch bridge in Humboldt have disappeared.
One of the fifth graders said, "It's just an illusion!"  I can't think of a better description of art work.  Pablo Picasso said, "Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth."  Fifth graders are learning how to create shadows to give their work depth.

      LINES, LINES!!
My first graders are learning about line!  For this project we drew lines with glue.  After the glue was dry we painted lots of color on top. At our next art class we used black and silver crayon to outline the glue and add lines, lines, lines!!
     Flowers of the season
We live in the Sunflower State and these flowers are in full bloom right now.  After looking at Vincent Van Gogh's sunflowers, my second graders created colorful, vases of sunflowers.
Third graders did works based on VanGogh's Sunflowers.  You can really see the growth in technique and detail!
Third grade also learned about radial designs.
Fourth graders had a lot of fun carving in Styrofoam to create low relief creations of animals.  It was quite messy, and fingers got a work out, but it was well worth the effort.  This project gave two art works from one piece as we made prints from the carving!
This is an example of one of the carvingings and the print.  The students embellished the prints by stamping patterns and adding shapes.
Fifth Graders began the school year with design and color.
This is a fifth grader's floral creation. This was done with colored pencil and watercolor.
This fifth grade piece was created with Elmer's School Glue, watercolor and black felt tip pen.

First Graders have been water coloring Giraffe.  There was a lot of discussion on whether giraffe had black or brown spots. I love to listen in on their very serious discussions.
Some students always take a lot of time to paint in each little spot, while others happily paint over the entire giraffe.  They love the activity of painting but haven't quite figured out that when they are finished it should look like a giraffe!  We are working on this.
Fourth Graders enjoyed working with oil pastels.  They commented on the feel of the crayon when they filled areas in with color.  The colors are so bright and vibrant, everyone was excited.

Tea Time! I have several tea pots and cups that I set about the art room for students to draw.
In this assignment my students could choose a teapot to draw from several around the art room.  We talked about complimentary colors and they were to use a complimentary color combination on their table cloth in the picture.  Students were also reminded to draw what they see, not what their brain tells them is real.  Children will draw the top edge of the cup a circle, rather than an ellipse because they know the cup is round on top.  But when viewed on a table, we really don't see the circle shape!
